When Rakesh joined ABM Systems, over a year ago now, much of his experience had been in the retail space.
We asked him to assist a large global bank in a complex and demanding project. His skills in Qlik and business resulted in a successful project. Rakesh has also lead the delivery of an executive reporting suite, score-carding 60 critical metrics for a major insurance client. The work is highly praised by the CEO and executive team; it is used as the source of truth in a business undergoing a complicated transformational period.
How did you get started in data analytics?
I fell into this space while working at a previous company, discovering they had a huge gap in understanding their IT landscape and set about building a dashboard to provide insights that no one ever knew before. Using my previous skills sets and a natural curiosity for solving problems, Data Analytics became a natural fit in the organisation.
How long have you been with the company?
I have been with ABM for 1 year working for many exciting projects in finance, insurance, and retail.
What software do you champion and why?
I champion data analytics tools because of the way they give insights to businesses that have typically never had access to or two bigger data sets. Recently a client told me, the best thing about this is we are now informed when we talk to our stakeholders and not guessing or trusting what they say is true. We bring facts to the table and leave the anecdotes out.
What digital trends do you predict for 2020?
I think the answer in Jan is very different to now, with the events of the last month businesses are going to look at solutions to cut cost and new ways to engage customers. A great way to get started on this is to look at analytics tools which dig deeper under the surface of top-level numbers to help answer questions for the business. I also think over the next 6 months there is going to be a huge shift in consumer behaviour moving to online as retail shops dry up.
Where did you grow up?
I was born and grew up in Wollongong (just south of Sydney), the place holds so many special memories. Often visit my parents who still reside there, and catch up regularly with friends (some I’ve known since pre-school). So always an enjoyable time.
What is your greatest career achievement?
The greatest achievement was my wife, and I have the courage to resign from our well-paying jobs to travel around the world. Whilst this doesn’t seem like a ‘career’ achievement, it most certainly was a big move early in a career to trust ourselves that it will be okay.
What are your goals in ABM Systems?
Delivery high-quality work for my clients and to become a trusted partner to my clients, and to introduce a new client to ABM.
What is your most unforgettable moment while at ABM Systems?
My first Christmas party, a brilliantly organised day of fun and excitement, and being a fresh noodle making master(ish)!!!
What hobbies do you do outside of work?
Outside of work, my two young children, Miss 3 and Mr 6 months keep my wife and I very busy. I enjoy playing competitive squash, doing DIY renovations around the house, and gardening with a semi-successful garden – try to use the other half of the brain!
Rakesh has become an extremely important member of the team. He is valued as much for his technical abilities in Qlik as he is for the ability to understand the business drivers and outcomes for his projects. Outside of his project work, Rakesh is always keen to improve our offerings and approaches to our clients.
