Personalising Employee Experience with Office 365 and SharePoint online

SharePoint has long been the centre point for company communication and the starting point for any new employee to connect with company culture. Though the technology landscape has changed quite a bit, having a central point of communication is still a critical component for communication, culture and engagement.

With the introduction of Communication Sites and Hub Sites, SharePoint took the humble company intranet to the next level. It has never been so easy and so fast to roll out a visually engaging portal that gives employees a platform to engage with each other and the greater organisation. With native responsive design, integration with Microsoft Teams and a slick mobile app, SharePoint and Office 365 (O365) have raised the bar and made it easy to set up a quality intranet.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced a new type of site, called the Home site which will be the basis of the intelligent intranet. The new template leverages all the existing O365 components as well as Artificial Intelligence or AI, personalising content delivery for each user, giving them an effective user experience.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”28005″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1562633426307{padding-top: 3% !important;}”]Based on the communication site, organisations will still experience the rapid development, standardised look and feel, integration with Teams etc. However, the experience will be supercharged with personalised content for each employee or user.

News can be collected from different sites and shared in O365 and though this does make things easier for the communications officer, there is still a need to distinguish official and unofficial news items. Home Sites can natively distinguish and identify news based on where it comes from.

One of the main considerations engaging with content and one of my favourite features in the Communication Sites is that images and articles can be easily shared, video content can also be made available. At ABM, we now record training sessions held in MS Teams, upload them to Stream and then embed them into the intranet for everyone to interact and comment on. This has dramatically enhanced our ability to transfer knowledge and upskill new employees.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”28006″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

Video took a while to adopt, but the integration between Teams, Stream and SharePoint make it so easy to have engaging content without a professional editing studio. The integration with Stream is also quite flexible. Multiple videos can be embedded in a card-like layout to give users access to all of the videos on a specific topic. However, you can also simply embed a single video onto a page.
